Today, processed foods account for around 70 percent of the calories consumed in America. Farmer’s markets and organic produce are becoming far more plentiful, but Americans are still eating more processed food than ever before. Processed foods are foods altered by manipulation, often to the point that their ingredients aren’t recognizable, with labels that are all but indecipherable. They usually come in some sort of packaging―boxes, bags, cans, etc.―and many have additives that are harmful to your cells, namely in the form of chemicals and artificial ingredients. What’s more, most are loaded with sugars such as high fructose corn syrup and refined flours that pile on weight and set you up for weight gain, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes.
